The actual decision
You already know you need this character regularly (é in your own name, € in financial documents): learn its Alt code. The one-time memorization cost pays for itself after a handful of uses, and it works in almost any Windows text field. You need a character you can't identify, and it's a one-off: open Character Map (Win, type charmap, Enter), search by name or scroll visually, click Select then Copy, then paste. See our full Windows Character Map guide. Slower per use, zero memorization, full Unicode range.
You're in Word and know the hex code point: type the 4-digit hex value, then press Alt+X, and Word converts it in place. Faster than Character Map when you already know the code point, but it does not work in Excel, browsers, or most other apps — see our Word vs Excel alt code guide for exactly where this method stops working.
What actually goes wrong when people mix these up
The most common frustration is trying Alt+X in an app other than Word and assuming it's broken — it's not a bug, it's scope. The second most common mistake is memorizing a Character-Map-sourced hex code point and trying to use it as an Alt+numpad code directly — classic Alt codes and Unicode code points are different numbering systems that only coincide for the first 256 characters.
