J-K-L printing 1-2-3, U-I-O printing 4-5-6? Your laptop thinks its right-hand letters are a number pad. One keystroke fixes it.
The 10-second test
Type J K L. Digits out means NumLock owns those keys. Wrong symbols out (e.g. where " should be) means a layout problem instead — see wrong keyboard layout.
Cause 1: NumLock and the embedded pad
Laptops without a dedicated pad overlay digits on 7 8 9 U I O J K L M. NumLock toggles that overlay, and BIOS settings or docking stations turn it on at boot.
Fix: press Fn + NumLock (often Fn + F11 or Fn + Scroll Lock — look for the tiny pad icons on your function keys). If it returns after reboot, disable “NumLock on boot” in your BIOS/UEFI.
Cause 2: Mouse Keys stole the pad
Windows' Mouse Keys accessibility feature drives the cursor with the number pad and can intercept those keys. Check Settings → Accessibility → Mouse → Mouse Keys is off — it toggles on when you press Alt + Shift + NumLock by accident.
Cause 3: Filter Keys delaying input
If keystrokes also feel delayed or dropped, Filter Keys (enabled by holding Shift for 8 seconds) is the culprit. Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys off.
